Non-essential trips discouraged
The regional secretary for Health, Clélio Meneses, who oversees Civil Protection, reiterated that non-essential trips to the island of São Jorge are not recommended, due to the seismovolcanic crisis.
“Taking into account the intensity of the seismic activity and the level of volcanic risk that is identified with the V4 alert level, we understand that it is not advisable to travel to São Jorge for reasons that are not strictly necessary,” the official told Lusa. in Candles.
The regional secretary was speaking after participating in a meeting with the president of the Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, with the president of the Chamber of Velas and with those responsible for the Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA) and Civil Protection.
Clélio Meneses advised against travelling to São Jorge, suggesting the postponement of sporting or cultural activities scheduled for the island.
“In the event of an earthquake of greater magnitude or a volcanic eruption, the number of people will be greater” to be removed and therefore, at this stage, “it is not advisable to travel to São Jorge from abroad”, he added.
