São Jorge “feels” four more earthquakes
237 earthquakes felt by the population since March 19
Açoriano Oriental reports that a total of 237 earthquakes have been felt by the population on the island of São Jorge, in the Azores, since the beginning of the seismovolcanic crisis, on March 19, four of which were in the last 24 hours, reveals CIVISA.
In a statement, the Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA) states that, between 10 am and 10 pm on Thursday, two earthquakes were felt and, from that time until 10 am today, two others were felt.

These tremors had magnitudes of 1.8 and 2.1 on the Richter scale, and were felt by the population with intensity III on the Modified Mercalli scale.
The Modified Mercalli scale measures the “degrees of intensity and respective description” and, when there is an intensity III, considered weak, the shaking is “felt indoors” and “the hanging objects sway”, feeling a “similar vibration”. caused by the passage of heavy vehicles”, describes the website of the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA).
Since the beginning of the seismovolcanic crisis in São Jorge, the largest earthquake (3.8 on the Richter scale) occurred on March 29, at 9:56 pm.
The island maintains volcanic alert level V4 (eruption threat) out of a total of seven, where V0 stands for “resting state” and V6 “eruption in progress”.
